President Obama has used executive authority to stop enforcement of The Jerusalem Embassy Act, the bill overwhelmingly passed by both houses of Congress in 1995. This bill would move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv back to Jerusalem, where all embassies were before 1967. Israel thus continues as the only country in the whole world prevented from naming its own capital. The Embassy Act calls for the US embassy move to Jerusalem to take place no later than May 3l, 1999.

The president once again has missed an opportunity to lend substance to his stated claim of supporting Israel. By turning his back on the will of the American people, by preventing enactment of this legislation, his actions tell another story with perhaps another agenda. "I hereby determine that it is necessary to protect the national security interests of the United States, to suspend for a period of 6 months the limitations set forth in sections 3(b) and 7(b) of the Act,” Obama said in a short memorandum to the Secretary of State.

Each of Obama’s suspensions, in six-month intervals, have included the same language.

All of those who love Israel and respect that nation as the only democracy in the Middle East should pay special attention to this overt action to avoid letting Israel choose its own capital; this seems to further reinforce the belligerence toward Israel that has been shown by this Administration for three years.

Every other country is permitted to decide their own capitol city where foreign governments will establish their embassies. Below is the powerful wording quoted from the Embassy Act itself - substantiating this history and justifying the move of the US Embassy back to Jerusalem, Israel's capital for 3,000 years:

" In 1996, the State of Israel will celebrate the 3,000th anniversary of the Jewish presence in Jerusalem since King David’s entry."
